Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Squad to Face Team India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected call-up.

Performance Issues Result in Exclusion

The right-hander was left out from the ODI squad following being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.

The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now work towards a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia seek a solution to their top-order woes.

Bowling Returns and Fitness Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a back injury by the time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
