Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
