Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop in Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The victim, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused of attempted murder but following the woman's death the charge has been updated to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities stated officers would be around the city centre through Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses who might have observed the accused, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, black hat, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened near Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Police said they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response after completing her work period around 10 PM on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", and said some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting the city fairly regularly to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She doesn't drive employed at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's terrible."
