European Far-Right Setting the Public Agenda, Study Finds

Established political parties are more and more enabling the far right to set the public discourse, as per a recent research carried out in Germany.

Academics discovered that this phenomenon has inadvertently benefited far-right parties by validating their ideas and spreading them to a broader audience.

Analysis Based on Over 20 Years of Media Reporting

The results, released in the academic journal on political studies, relied on an automated text analysis of more than 520,000 articles from six German publications.

Capital-based scholars noted that as the radical faction moved from marginal topics in the late 1990s to core subjects like integration and immigration, established political groups increasingly adjusted their messaging in reaction.

This adjustment boosted the dissemination of these concepts and indicated to the electorate that such positions were acceptable.

Consequences for Democracy

"Political communication by mainstream political groups is crucial in the electoral success of the far right," explained a expert in political behavior participating in the study.

"This factor has been underestimated," she added.

The impact was evident even when conventional groups were condemning the far right. "They still receive focus," the expert remarked. "The main point is that because we live in such a struggle for visibility, this attention is key."

Mainstreaming Phenomenon Throughout Europe

While the research was focused on Germany, this mainstreaming phenomenon is likely to apply to countries across the European continent.

"This is frequently observed in German and British news outlets," said another co-author. "The far right makes a statement and everyone starts talking about it for one week."

"Even if you're opposing it, you're echoing it," he added.

Toughening of Public Rhetoric

At times, leaders have also toughened their discourse to align with that of the far right.

In a recent discussion, a former German chancellor advocated large-scale expulsions and pushed for them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."

Similar instances can be observed throughout the continent, as politicians from countries ranging from the United Kingdom to the French Republic embrace the rhetoric of the radical right, especially on immigration.

This has created an feedback loop that would have been inconceivable a ten years prior.

Core Issue: Who Dictates the Agenda?

"{If you're a moderate political group and you are discussing societal topics – migration, integration – in a way that is determined by the rhythm of the radical right, that's the whole idea of narrative control," clarified a study author.

Other parties have taken additional measures, seeking to copy the hardline agenda of the far right, despite studies indicates that doing so leads the electorate to vote for the radical faction.

Gradual Influence and Public Perception

The extent of information gathered revealed that the influence of far-right parties had been progressive and had increased over time.

"Voter awareness doesn't change from day to day," commented a researcher. "However, when you hear this negative framing around migration every second week, and it is being disseminated not only by far-right parties but also, for example, by established political organizations, then of course this storyline travels further."

Requirement for Established Groups to Carve Out Their Own Narratives

The research emphasized the necessity for mainstream political parties to develop their distinct discourses, particularly on subjects such as migration and integration, rather than constantly following the radical right.

"It resembles a choreography," said one researcher. "When the leader is radical and you're responding to them, you cannot decide which music should be playing."
